How Ayurveda Music Aids in Healing Our Illnesses

Ayurveda is a system of traditional healing that has been practiced in India since the ancient period. This system has enormous influence in South Asia and it is still practiced as a form of alternative medicine. This system of traditional medicine has evolved throughout its existence and is now accepted in the West as an alternative system of medicine. The ayurveda system is recognized in the West as a form of complementary and alternative medicine or CAM. Some of its systems and methods have enjoyed a recent surge of popularity. The use of herbs, massages, and yoga exercises has been used to complement traditional and contemporary medical therapies. Every so often these methods are used as entirely a form of CAM therapy.

A doctor and author living about 1000 B.C. and practiced ayurveda describes perfect health as "a state where all of constitutional elements of the body are in perfect balance, whose appetite is excellent, whose tissue layers function normally, whose excretory systems, and whose self, senses, and mind remain full of bliss. Everything in our world has a unique personal vibration, as stated in the philosophy of Ayurveda. Animate and inanimate matter has this unique personal vibration distinctive from all matter. Only when there is an unhindered and free flow of this energy within a person is that individual in good health. When there are disturbances in the flow this causes illness within the person. With the kind of tainted surroundings we are living in, plus the poor eating habits, terrible lifestyle preferences, and highly stressful careers, it is enormously difficult to find an individual with a free flow of energy within. Due to this situation, the minds and bodies of most people are in a state of imbalance.

The aim of ayurveda is to re-establish the balance of the free flow of energy within a person in order to bring on a state of health. As a healing system, ayurveda has several methods that restore balance in the energy flow of the body and restore health back to its original state. Some of the relaxation techniques that can restore this balance are meditation and yoga. Some ancient techniques can also be used alone or in conjunction with other methods. As a vital method in healing, herbal preparations are used to restore balance without overloading the body.

Another effective ayurvedic technique to restore harmony to the energy flow of the body is to use an appropriate music. As a vibration, music has the ability to affect the vibrations in the body. Ayurveda healing music is an ancient part of the 5000 year old Ayurveda holistic natural healing system. Ayurvedic medicine believes that the pituitary gland in the brain is stimulated by the right music. Although the size of the pituitary gland is that of a pea, it secretes powerful hormones and regulates homeostasis. The melodic mode used in Indian classical music which is called Raga, is used in Ayurvedic medicine to create the melodies of healing. The tones of the Raga are different from those of the western scales. The Raga tones are both sharper and flatter. The Raga is defined as "that which colors the mind". The Raga has spiritual connections while western music does not. Ragas are believed to have positive effects on a lot of ailments including pain, insomnia, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and even aging.

Aside from having positive effects on certain ailments, Ayurvedic music also proves to be effective in controlling hypertension and liver function. In order to create vibrations in the cells of the body, Ayurveda makes use of music. The vibrations produced can change the consciousness of the person thus restoring lost health. Music has been recognized to improve efficiency and concentration in times of prolonged periods of work. The right kinds of music can soothe, refresh, and induce a relaxed mood. - 31856
